Question: Hi Camille, what can I do for gnats? Thank you! Jeannine
Answer: Good afternoon, Thank you for your inquiry.
Gnats, mosquitos, and tics are all flying pests that thrive in moist areas. Some areas of our landscapes have a hard time drying out fully such as beds on the north side of the house, grass, or areas beneath heavy shade. You might consider watering a little less and give these areas a chance to dry out thoroughly. That might be a little difficult for you. If this is the case, there are 2 solutions of which I am aware.
1) Beneficial nematodes. This is an organic solution. Follow the directions on the label. As with other organic treatments, it is hit and miss. It can be expensive and you have to be patient to get control. This will not work if you are having to make your yard mosquito or gnat free for a party you are having tomorrow. 2) Pyrethrin or pyrethroid (synthetic) product. This is a chemical solution. It can come under many labels. Spray grass, soil beds, or plants as directed on the label to control these bugs. Control will be very quickly (same day) but if the conditions do not change, they will probably be back. Baca’s Trees can treat your yard for these pests. We will often come the day before a big party to keep the blood suckers away. Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything else I can do for you. Thank you … Camille
